Nnenna Osuji
Business Woman of the Year Finalist

Born in Aberdeen of Nigerian parents, Nnenna was raised on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean before returning to Scotland for University. She has been the Medical Director at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust since August 2015. 

Recently Dr Osuji was appointed Deputy Chief Executive alongside her role as Medical Director.  Having joined the NHS in 1995, Dr Osuji took up the post of consultant haematologist at the Trust in 2005, and became the Trust’s Deputy Medical Director in February 2014 having been Associate Medical Director from February 2013.

Throughout her leadership roles she continues an active clinical practice and is dedicated to her patients. 

Dr Osuji has been a consultant haematologist for over a decade. In that role she was head of department and clinical lead for haemato-oncology leading the Trust through successful peer review and the introduction of electronic prescription of chemotherapy. She was also Clinical Research Fellow and then Honorary Consultant Haematologist at specialist cancer hospital the Royal Marsden, between 2002 to 2007 and 2007 to 2011 respectively. 

As Caldicott Guardian, Dr Osuji is responsible for protecting the confidentiality of patient and service-user information and enabling appropriate information-sharing.  In addition, Dr Osuji’s role within the Trust incorporates amongst other responsibilities: Professional leadership of clinicians; Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs; Trustee of Trust’s charitable funds; License holder-Human Tissue Authority and Trust lead for 7 day service as well as providing clinical strategic leadership on integrated services within Croydon and South West London.

An active member of the national Clinical Research Network for Cancer, Dr. Osuji sits on the Chemotherapy and Pharmacy Advisory Service Committee and continues to be Principal Investigator on a number of key trials. A keen educator, Dr Osuji has been an educational supervisor and led on the successful deployment of medical revalidation at the Trust. She was an associate lecturer for the Open University lecturing on ‘Communication in Health and Social care’ for many years, before moving on to lecture and consult on the Mary Seacole programme provided then through the Open University in conjunction with the Hay group and NHS Leadership Academy, providing leadership teaching and training to emergent NHS leaders.

Having gained professional teaching accreditation, she currently sits on the professional advisory panel for The Society for Education and Training and is additionally, a member for the haemato-oncology sounding board for the Royal College of Pathologists.  Dr. Osuji has recently been appointed to the London Clinical Senate and sits as lead for Diversity and Inclusion on the council for the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Dr. Osuji remains principally committed to developing people, providing compassionate leadership, mentorship and support to junior doctors, Darzi fellows, multiple staff members and students at a local girls’ school. She considers one of her greatest prides being mother to four amazing children.
